the orange-red lipstick that changed my mind about orange-red lipsticks

Understatement alert: I have A LOT of red lipsticks in my collection, which means I probably don’t need another one in the mix. However, I realized recently that all my red lippies fall into the blue-red category. I’ve always gravitated toward cooler reds because I feel like they’re more flattering to my pinkish complexion, plus they make my teeth look whiter (which is never a bad thing, right?).

how i broke out of my makeup routine with a runway look

When it comes to putting on makeup in the morning, I am a creature of habit and venturing outside the box merely means switching up my lipstick colour. To break me out of my habit, my co-worker Emily suggested I try the Mikhael Kale look that was recently featured at World Mastercard Fashion Week in Toronto.

the mask you can get away with applying at the office—seriously!

To be honest, I’ve never really given my neck much thought. It holds up my head, and it’s a nice spot to display the occasional statement necklace or jaunty scarf. Other than that, the ol’neck doesn’t get a lot of attention. OK, any attention.

my runway ready ‘negative space’ nails

I’m a simple girl. So like my everyday makeup, I tend to keep my nail looks very minimal. But I have to admit the same old beige and pink can get a little overlooked. Luckily enough, I had the chance to chat with Essie Canada’s Lead Nail Artist Rita Remark backstage at WMCFW (World Mastercard Fashion Week) at David Pecaut Square. Together we created a simple ‘negative space’ nail art look from Matthew Gallagher’s runway show. This nail look is a minimalist’s dream.

five reasons i can’t get enough of rose water

Roses are the star ingredient in a lot of beauty products I reach for again and again:rose scented salves, Nuxe’s Micellar Cleanser and of course, good old-fashioned rose water. It’s a timeless hallmark of grannies for a reason – it works.

how I dyed my hair purple without bleaching

I tend to wear a lot of black and neutral outfits during the fall. So what better way to add colour to my look than dying my hair. Although purple was my first choice, I was a little bit afraid to commit to such a bright colour, so I leaned towards the Garnier Color Styler in Bronze. I immediately saw results with the bronze dye. The result from dark hair to bronze was such a subtle transition.

beauty hack: how i fixed a broken eyeshadow

At Glow, handling precious cargo in the form of gorgeous eyeshadow palettes and swoon-worthy blushes is a daily occurrence (yup, I love my job). Another common occurrence? Destroying said cargo for the sake of a beautiful picture (case in point: see below photo).

the dior-approved concealer that made me a concealer convert

Confession: I rarely use concealer. When I tell fellow beauty editors this, the reaction is a mix of aghast expressions and gaping mouths, as if I’ve committed a cardinal sin. And so, I’ve been making a concentrated effort to use one, if only to see if I’ve really been missing out. Enter Dior’s new Backstage Pros Fix It.

I tried DIY nail art…and it was harder than I thought

The first thing I learned when attempting this DIY nail art is that even easy nail art isn’t really easy. I have a newfound respect for all the nail technicians out there who make it look so darn effortless!

    my experiment with gel topcoats

My nails are usually bare because I am very tough on my manicures and any nail polish I apply myself will undoubtedly chip off in a matter of 24 hours. When Shellac came on the scene, I did a happy jazz hands dance. It was great that my nails didn’t chip for two weeks, but removing the polish was a pain.

here’s how i’m kicking pimples to the curb

A couple of weeks ago I woke up with a HUGE blemish on the side of my head. My husband—not wrongly—nicknamed it Mount Vesuvius (and they say romance is dead!). I brushed my hair in front of my face and caked on the concealer, but there was no ignoring the fact that my skin was seriously unhappy. It was clearly time to tackle my pimple problem head on (see what I did there?).

here's how I keep my makeup brushes squeaky clean

It’s truth time: With early lectures, assignments, going to the gym, work and sleep, I sometimes forget to clean my makeup brushes. Like everyone else, I use my make up brushes every single day.

how my love affair with chloé began

The first time I met Chloé was in Paris. She sat on a perfume counter in a pretty glass bottle wrapped in a dusty-pink bow. It was the first time I’d ever walked through the streets of Paris and I looked at her the same way I looked at everything else in the city—with wide-eyed wonder. This must be what cool, sophisticated Parisian girls must smell like and I totally wanted to be one of them.

i got my hair cut at a barbershop—and loved it

When I was very generously offered a cut by John Frieda Canadian creative consultant Dante Perrone this week, I eagerly accepted the offer. Even though I’m always on top of my colour, my hair was in desperate need of a cut (I’ve been sporting a shaggy grown-out lob for far too long).
