the orange-red lipstick that changed my mind about orange-red lipsticks

Understatement alert: I have A LOT of red lipsticks in my collection, which means I probably don’t need another one in the mix. However, I realized recently that all my red lippies fall into the blue-red category. I’ve always gravitated toward cooler reds because I feel like they’re more flattering to my pinkish complexion, plus they make my teeth look whiter (which is never a bad thing, right?).

how i broke out of my makeup routine with a runway look

When it comes to putting on makeup in the morning, I am a creature of habit and venturing outside the box merely means switching up my lipstick colour. To break me out of my habit, my co-worker Emily suggested I try the Mikhael Kale look that was recently featured at World Mastercard Fashion Week in Toronto.

the mask you can get away with applying at the office—seriously!

To be honest, I’ve never really given my neck much thought. It holds up my head, and it’s a nice spot to display the occasional statement necklace or jaunty scarf. Other than that, the ol’neck doesn’t get a lot of attention. OK, any attention.

trx made me feel like a cirque de soleil performer

I was recently asked by Goodlife to check out suspension training. It's done with TRX, a webbed nylon strap with a loop and a spongey but durable handle. The TRX is attached to pretty much anything you want to attach it to, from a pole, goal posts or fence. But at the gym, about eight of them were hung on a giant rack. It looked like a swing set without the seats.

my runway ready ‘negative space’ nails

I’m a simple girl. So like my everyday makeup, I tend to keep my nail looks very minimal. But I have to admit the same old beige and pink can get a little overlooked. Luckily enough, I had the chance to chat with Essie Canada’s Lead Nail Artist Rita Remark backstage at WMCFW (World Mastercard Fashion Week) at David Pecaut Square. Together we created a simple ‘negative space’ nail art look from Matthew Gallagher’s runway show. This nail look is a minimalist’s dream.

five reasons i can’t get enough of rose water

Roses are the star ingredient in a lot of beauty products I reach for again and again:rose scented salves, Nuxe’s Micellar Cleanser and of course, good old-fashioned rose water. It’s a timeless hallmark of grannies for a reason – it works.

five things I learned from working at a beauty magazine

Working at a beauty mag isn’t just a dream job, it’s the best job. And I’m not trying to rub it in – honestly. I’m just really grateful that as a health editor I get to research and learn about the latest science behind products, workouts and nutrition. But working at Glow has also exposed me to makeup, skin care and the beauty industry too.

no, I haven’t had too much wine! how I calm down facial redness

I’ve gotten used to people asking me why my face is so red, especially after a jog or more likely, a couple drinks. Besides being unhelpful, I never know how to respond. Ever since a facialist casually told me I might have mild rosacea, I’ve been on a crazed hunt for products that neutralize ruddiness.

how I dyed my hair purple without bleaching

I tend to wear a lot of black and neutral outfits during the fall. So what better way to add colour to my look than dying my hair. Although purple was my first choice, I was a little bit afraid to commit to such a bright colour, so I leaned towards the Garnier Color Styler in Bronze. I immediately saw results with the bronze dye. The result from dark hair to bronze was such a subtle transition.

beauty hack: how i fixed a broken eyeshadow

At Glow, handling precious cargo in the form of gorgeous eyeshadow palettes and swoon-worthy blushes is a daily occurrence (yup, I love my job). Another common occurrence? Destroying said cargo for the sake of a beautiful picture (case in point: see below photo).

the dior-approved concealer that made me a concealer convert

Confession: I rarely use concealer. When I tell fellow beauty editors this, the reaction is a mix of aghast expressions and gaping mouths, as if I’ve committed a cardinal sin. And so, I’ve been making a concentrated effort to use one, if only to see if I’ve really been missing out. Enter Dior’s new Backstage Pros Fix It.

I tried DIY nail art…and it was harder than I thought

The first thing I learned when attempting this DIY nail art is that even easy nail art isn’t really easy. I have a newfound respect for all the nail technicians out there who make it look so darn effortless!

    my experiment with gel topcoats

My nails are usually bare because I am very tough on my manicures and any nail polish I apply myself will undoubtedly chip off in a matter of 24 hours. When Shellac came on the scene, I did a happy jazz hands dance. It was great that my nails didn’t chip for two weeks, but removing the polish was a pain.
